Facebook’s Latest Side Project Is Called Riff

It is not uncommon for employees of a major tech company to work on a side project that is ultimately launched to a global audience. That’s precisely with Facebook has done with Riff. It started out as a side project by several Facebook employees who stayed behind after-hours to work on it. The result is a “creative tool” that allows friends to make short videos together.

Riff is quite simple to use. Anyone can start off by creating a video. Give the video a topic and then your friends can see it, if they want they can add their own videos on that topic. Videos can only be up to 20 seconds long.

Once the friends add a video to that topic their friends will also be shown the video in Riff and they will also be able to add to it. “The potential pool of creative collaborators can grow exponentially from there,” says product manager Josh Miller.

The videos can then be shared within a circle of friends, on Facebook, or anywhere on the internet at any given time.

Riff is a project of the Facebook Creative Labs and it is now available as a free download in 15 languages for both Android and iOS.
