Bing’s image search is becoming more convenient and useful today with the latest update. Bing will now show interesting information when a user selects a picture in the search results, such as places to buy a particular product that’s in the image, related searches, or a list of pages which contain more info on that image.
Users will also see Pinterest collections that include the particular image, and simple things like additional sizes of the image — it remains to be seen how well these features will work, but it’s nice to see Bing’s image search is becoming more than just a simple search tool.
Image search is also getting a visual overhaul that Bing says will look new yet familiar. Clicking on an image will show related searches, the source page, and image metadata, along with actions like Pin It (allowing Bing to get more images to add to Pinterest collections or the option to view the image results in a slideshow. The mobile interface is also getting a slight change — instead of showing relevant information below a picture, the updated interface will overlay it on the image instead.
The new image search features will begin rolling out to PCs, tablets and smartphones over the coming weeks in a staged rollout. The Android and iOS apps will be updated as well, and in a further show of support for the competition, Microsoft will also be releasing a Chrome extension that will merge the new Bing image search features directly into webpages.
