Android 5.1.1 has been spotted multiple times recently in the Android SDK Manager and Developer Portal so it was expected that this version of Google’s mobile operating system will be coming out soon, and it has. Today Google has released Android 5.1.1 for Nexus Player, one of the first Android TV devices ever to hit the market.
Google introduced Android TV last year, it’s a completely new effort on the company’s part to take over your living room. Android TV powered devices provide access to apps, games, streaming services and more. Set-top boxes like the Nexus Player are already available while companies like Sony have also created smart TVs powered by this software.
Nexus Player is the first device for which Google has released Android 5.1.1. Google has released the factory image online and so far there have been no reports of this update rolling out over-the-air, but it shouldn’t take long for that too happen.
It’s expected that this update will finally address the memory leak issue that plagued both Android 5.0 and Android 5.1, apart from bringing fixes for some other bugs. Android 5.1.1 is unlikely to add any new features to the Nexus Player.
Android 5.1.1 factory image for the Nexus Player can now be downloaded from Google’s developer website, though the OTA should be rolling out in the very near future.
