Through the Xbox One preview program Microsoft allows members to beta test upcoming software updates before it’s released to all owners of the console. Sony doesn’t have a similar plan for the PlayStation 4 but it looks like things might be changing, albeit on a limited scale. According to a report Sony is allowing a very select group of PS4 owners to beta test the upcoming update for this console.

Polygon received information about an email sent by Sony to selected participants of the PlayStation MVP ambassador program. They were given the option to opt-in to beta test version 2.50 software update for the PlayStation 4.

Eligible members of the ambassador program will first receive a message through PlayStation Network and will then get a voucher to download the beta software which will last until March 9th.

Sony’s latest move with regards to PS4 software isn’t that different from Microsoft’s Xbox One preview program even if the company is conducting the beta test at a very limited scale as opposed to its counterpart.

It’s unclear at this point in time if Sony ever plans on expanding this program and allowing more PlayStation 4 owners to test beta software before it’s released to everyone.

PS4 owners will certainly not object if Sony goes down this route.
