Tesla has proudly been carrying the torch for all electric cars. The company has made a good name for itself and has proven that all electric cars can work. To counter Tesla’s increasing dominance as far as electric cars are concerned legacy carmakers are now throwing their hats in the ring as well. Tesla might also have to compete with an unconventional competitor, Richard Branson’s Virgin.
Sir Richard Branson is the founder of the Virgin, a group that has its fingers in many pies, including but not limited to the airline and telecommunication industry. Branson has hinted that Virgin might come out with its own electric car.
Speaking to Bloomberg, Branson said that Virgin has got “teams of people” who are working on and developing electric cars. “So you never know. You may well find Virgin competing with Tesla in the car business as we do in the space business. We’ll see what happens.”
It wouldn’t be an entirely new dimension for Virgin to move into the world of electric cars. The company is also working on electric cars that take part in the Formula E, a racing series which only features electric cars. It shouldn’t be that hard for Virgin to move into cars meant for consumers.
Obviously Branson didn’t say when Virgin’s first consumer electric car could arrive, so don’t prepare to mark your calendars just yet.
