Last year Samsung unveiled a virtual reality headset called the Gear VR. It works with the Galaxy Note 4. Today the company unveiled its new smartphones, Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, and also announced a new Gear VR innovator edition headset that works with the new smartphones. Apart from adding support for its latest smartphones Samsung has also made a couple of tweaks to the VR headset to ensure that they provide users with an improved virtual reality experience.
The new Gear VR innovator edition has been developed in collaboration with Oculus, just like the last one, and it features an accelerometer, gyrometer and a proximity sensor. It offers a 96-degree field of view. Samsung has reduced the size by 15 percent as compared to the first generation headset.
Since the new smartphones have higher pixel-density, and the VR headset uses their displays, Samsung says the new headset will provide an unrivaled cinematic experience. It promises better weight balance through ergonomically redesigned straps while allowing for an extended VR experience thanks to mechanical ventilation.
In its press release the company also confirms that the Gear VR can now be powered with its USB port which allows for extended usage time. The updated virtual reality headset will be available for purchase later this year.
