According to Microsoft’s marketing chief Chris Capossela, “We’re now researching what the new brand, or the new name, for our browser should be in Windows 10. We’ll continue to have Internet Explorer, but we’ll also have a new browser called Project Spartan, which is codenamed Project Spartan. We have to name the thing.” The use of the Internet Explorer brand will continue to exist as it won’t be killed off entirely and will be kept around for some versions of Windows 10 for enterprise compatibility.
Microsoft also did some research and found that when putting the Microsoft name in front of the product, it adds some appeal, at least according to the Chrome users that they surveyed, so perhaps there’s a good chance that the next browser might start with “Microsoft” as opposed to just “Windows”. Internet Explorer has also been on the receiving end of many jokes due to its clunky nature in the past, something that Microsoft has not been able to shake until now even with the various improvements, so perhaps a rebranding might be a great idea.
