Recently there have been rumors that Microsoft might make a substantial investment in Cyanogen. That’s the team that makes CyanogenMod, one of the most popular custom ROMs for Android devices, the idea of Microsoft investing in an Android modding outfit might seem interesting at first but it appears this may remain an idea after all. Bloomberg has published a new report claiming that Redmond is actually not going to invest in Cyanogen.
The report cites unnamed sources who have told the scribe that Microsoft is not going to put money in this company. Despite that it pegs Cyanogen’s latest funding round at $100 million.
What Microsoft might do instead of giving the company money is work out some sort of partnership with it. This would bring Microsoft apps to future CyanogenMod builds which we know will go on to power millions of Android devices.
Microsoft has been particularly interested in getting its apps on as many Android devices as possible. It recently struck a deal with Samsung which puts several core Microsoft apps on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.
It was first reported back in January that Microsoft could invest as much as $70 million in Cyanogen as it was interested in taking up a minority stake in the company. Today’s report contradicts that. There have been no confirmation or denial from Microsoft while Cyanogen is yet to formally confirm its latest funding round.
