Yesterday Apple unveiled a notebook that had long been rumored. The new MacBook has a 12-inch Retina Display and almost all that was rumored about it, like the new trackpad, a fanless design, Core M processors from Intel and more. The new MacBook just has one port, a USB Type C, which will perform any and all duties from charging the notebook to data transfer and video output. LaCie has announced a new external drive with USB-C to support this new notebook.

This is the first notebook from Apple that aggressively pushes the USB Type C standard. Since it is an open standard it shouldn’t take long for other companies to come up with adapters that give users additional ports to work with.

The new MacBook has just the one, so if it’s being used to charge the notebook, it can’t simultaneously be used for data transfer if no adapter is connected. Apple is selling those adapters for $79, that’s more than what the Apple TV costs.

LaCie has announced its Porsche Design Mobile Drive with the USB Type C technology, making it the perfect fit for this notebook. It promises data transfer rates of up to 100 MB/s and is housed in an enclosure fashioned out of 3mm solid aluminium.

An adapter is included with the package which will let users hook up the LaCie Mobile Drive to a USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 port. LaCie Mobile Drive will be available in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options from next quarter. No pricing has been announced.
