A couple of days ago we reported that thanks to Unity developer Erik Roystan, he managed to get the classic Super Mario 64 up and running in web browsers through the use of the Unity engine. It also helped to boost the graphics quality of the game, which is rather old, making it look like it is a relatively new game released for one of Nintendo’s current consoles.

Now with Nintendo talking about making games for mobile devices, how would a game like Super Mario 64 run on a smartphone? James Fletcher from Mobot decided to see what that would be like and basically converted Roystan’s Super Mario 64’s Unity project into an iPhone project, throwing in some virtual controls in the process.

The end result is in the video above in which we can look at Super Mario 64 being played on the iPhone 6. Of course we should note that this isn’t a full version of Super Mario 64. In fact the browser version was just meant to be a demonstration of the Unity engine and only the first level of the game was created.

We should also point out that despite Nintendo’s forray into the mobile games scene, the company has stated that they will not be bringing existing or past IPs onto mobile. Rather the company will be focusing on creating new titles based on existing franchises, so if you want to play Mario on your phone, this is probably the closest we’ll get, emulators notwithstanding.
