We have known for a while now that HBO is working on an over-the-top internet TV streaming service. The cable giant has already confirmed its plans to move into internet streaming in order to capture those cord cutters who just don’t want to pay for a cable subscription. According to the new report the cable giant’s much awaited service will be called HBO Now and it will cost $15 per month.
Through HBO Go it already allows people to stream new and old content, however to access this service a cable subscription is required, HBO Now will not. It will be a standalone streaming service for $15 per month.
According to the International Business Times, HBO is looking to launch this service early next month, before the fifth season of Game of Thrones is released.
However HBO will have to be careful with this. Last year HBO Go crashed as a lot of people tried to tune into the premiere using the service. It just couldn’t keep up with the load.
While it will make sense for HBO to drive subscriptions for its new service by tapping into the frenzy that surrounds Game of Thrones it will have to ensure that HBO Now is up to the task. The report claims it won’t go ahead with the launch unless it’s absolutely sure that the service can handle the pressure.
Apple is said to be one of the launch partners for HBO Now. This means a standalone app might be released for the Apple TV which would allow users to stream directly using their set-top box.
HBO is reportedly planning to bring its internet TV service to a variety of platforms, including but not limited to Roku, PlayStation and the Xbox, but it is unclear right now how long it will take before HBO Now arrives on those platforms.
