Speed limits are there for a reason which is to keep people from driving too fast in certain areas. However we’re sure that we’ve all been guilty of flaunting that particular law once or twice in our lifetimes, but Ford wants to put an end to that in the name of safety. The company has recently announced their Intelligent Speed Limiter.
This is a technology that the company hopes will put an end to speeding, whether it be intentional or unintentional by slowing your car down. How it works is that through a camera that is mounted on your car’s windscreen, it will continuously scan for signboards that displays the speed limit, and from there will adjust your car’s speed so that it is in line with the limits.
For example if you’re entering a 50kmph zone and you’re driving at 80kmph, the Intelligent Speed Limiter will slow your car down to 50kmph. This will be done not through the use of braking, which can be a bit dangerous not to mention sudden, but it will be done by slowing the velocity of your car down by limiting the amount of petrol that is being pushed into the car’s engine.
However the system can be overridden through the press of a button on the console or by stepping on the gas pedal. According to Stefan Kappes, active safety supervisor, Ford of Europe, “Drivers are not always conscious of speeding and sometimes only becoming aware they were going too fast when they receive a fine in the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement. Intelligent Speed Limiter can remove one of the stresses of driving, helping ensure customers remain within the legal speed limit.” The technology will make its debut in the new Ford S-MAX.
