The Gear VR headset, which Samsung and Oculus have collaborated on, has been around since last year. Just yesterday Samsung announced an updated Gear VR headset that supports the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. Up till now Gear VR owners have only been able to take advantage of content that included game demos and some entertainment related content. That’s because developers didn’t have a place that they could use to sell the VR experiences that they created. Now they do. The content store for Gear VR has gone live.
Oculus talked about the content store’s launch for Gear VR in the press release that it sent out for the updated headset that’s meant for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge.
The launch is not being hyped up that much because its more of a soft launch. A representative for Oculus says that this is “an early build” of the content store and that the company is still “ironing out the kinks.”
The content store that has gone live right now is said to be a “preview” of what it will eventually become. Currently it can only be accessed by users in the United States and developers selling content through it can’t accept in-app purchases just yet.
Oculus says that it is working on “expanding commerce to the rest of the world,” apart from adding in-app purchases, but it doesn’t say when this will happen.
