It was first reported last week that Apple could release iOS 8.2 in the coming days. That has turned out to be true. The company is seeding iOS 8.2 to all supported iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models today around the world. iOS 8.2 is an incremental update but it brings one major feature that is instrumental for making existing iPhones work with the company’s new product. iOS 8.2 brings support for the Apple Watch.
Users need to hook up the Apple Watch to an iPhone in order to use its features. The watch needs that connection but it won’t be able to communicate with the iPhone unless and until it has iOS 8.2 installed.
Those who are interested in picking up Apple’s first smartwatch should definitely install this software update. iOS 8.2 is required for the two devices to work together.
Other than this crucial addition there’s not much that iOS 8.2 brings. The usual slew of performance and stability improvements is present along with several bug fixes. Some changes have also been made to the native Health app.
The Apple Watch isn’t going to start shipping until next month so users have ample time on their hands to update their iPhones to iOS 8.2.
Apple’s next software update, iOS 8.3, is expected in a few months and is likely going to bring a new emoji keyboard and wireless CarPlay support.
