We saw an aggressive shift in Microsoft’s strategy last year when it just couldn’t keep up to the PlayStation 4’s sales pace. The company unbundled Kinect from Xbox One and sold the console for $399, priced similarly to its rival, and then it cut the price down by $50. Microsoft gained on the PS4 during the holiday season because of this move and now it is doing something similar. Xbox One with Kinect price has been cut as well, albeit for a limited time.
The unbundled console recently went back to its full price but Microsoft had a change of heart. It once again knocked off the price of the Xbox One to aggressively compete against PS4 which is still ahead of Microsoft’s console if you look at global sales.
Starting today the Xbox One with Kinect is available for $449. That’s a $50 discount over the usual $499 retail. This promotion is valid until February 21st and discounted units will be available from major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Toys R Us, GameStop, Walmart apart from Microsoft Stores.
These price cuts don’t scare Sony. Recently the company was asked whether its going to respond to Microsoft’s strategy by cutting the PlayStation 4 price.
Sony said that while its aware of what Microsoft is doing, with regards to cutting price to boost sales, the company says it currently has no plans to bring down the PS4 from its retail price of $399.
