The Pebble smartwatch runs its own operating system, unlike the slew of newer smartwatches which appear to be powered by Google’s Android Wear. However perhaps to prevent users from jumping boat or maybe to acknowledge that Android Wear could become the dominant smartwatch OS, Pebble started to support Android Wear notifications last year.
The feature was only limited to Pebble’s beta testers but the good news is that it is now open to everyone. What this means is that if you have Android Wear compatible apps, they should now be able to communicate with your Pebble device just fine. Granted there won’t be any color to the notifications due to the Pebble’s display, but other than that we reckon it should be a pretty cool feature.
Now with support for Android Wear, we reckon that customers who were still trying to decide which device to get can go ahead and get a Pebble knowing that they won’t be missing out on any notifications in the future. Of course it remains to be seen how Pebble will hold up in the face of the Apple Watch which is said to begin shipping in April, but in the meantime are Pebble owners excited by this new feature?
