In November last year Microsoft surprised everyone by announcing Dropbox integration for Office. The company runs its own cloud storage service, OneDrive, and many would have though it impossible for the company to open up to other services. However it did open up and earlier today the company launched updated iOS apps that bring support for iCloud storage. Now Microsoft has announced that Office mobile and web apps are going to support all third party cloud storage services.
Microsoft today announced native cloud storage integration for all services in the Office iOS apps. Third party services can integrate directly into the “Locations” picker in iOS Office apps.
Users will be able to open, edit and save documents from any of these services right within the company’s own productivity apps. It has announced availability for iPhone and iPad integration today, and promises to do the same for Windows 10 and Android apps in the near future.
The company will now also allow cloud storage services to integrate Office Online in their applications which would allow users to open, view and edit documents they have stored in those services through any web browser.
Box, Citrix and Salesforce have already agreed to work with Microsoft on this under its new Cloud Storage Partner Program.
