Microsoft Announces FIDO Support For Windows 10

Over the past few years we’ve seen how easily hackers have managed to steal login information such as usernames and passwords. Kind of scary too especially when you consider that some of these logins are for sites and services that might be sensitive in nature, which has us wondering if perhaps biometric security could be the answer.

Now we’ve seen smartphones that apply the use of fingerprint sensors and scanners, and if you’re planning on using Windows 10 in the future upon its release, you will be pleased to learn that according to Microsoft (via The Verge), Windows 10 will support the next version of Fast Identification Online (FIDO) spec.

Ultimately what this will allow is for devices to work with third-party biometric hardware, such as fingerprint readers, which would remove the need for passwords as your fingerprint would be good enough to allow users access. FIDO currently has support in both the banking and tech field from companies such as Microsoft, Google, PayPal, and Bank of America.

At the moment, Microsoft is said to be contributing design inputs to version 2.0 for FIDO which hopefully means that in the near future, users of Windows 10 will be log into services using their fingerprints as opposed to using their passwords which could be hacked and used by someone else.
