Last year Microsoft made the decision to do away with the need for an Office 365 subscription for users of its Office for iPad apps, thus allowing users to view and make basic edits without having to need a subscription, although like we pointed out in our previous report, more advanced features would require a subscription, such as saving to OneDrive.
Now for those who want to save their documents to the cloud, such as Apple’s iCloud, you will be pleased to learn that Microsoft has recently updated their Office for iPad apps to support saving to iCloud. This means that if you’d rather not rely on OneDrive, subscribe to Office 365, or use Dropbox, saving to iCloud is now possible.
However accessing that particular feature isn’t very obvious and users will have to access iCloud documents from the “more” section, making things a little bit more difficult and confusing. There are also some restrictions on file types, so even if you see a text document but it is of a different extension or created with a different software, you won’t be able to access it or edit it.
If you’re a power user who might require access to all file types then perhaps using iCloud might not be the best way around it. For those who rely heavily on iCloud we can only imagine the limitations are pretty frustrating, but hopefully Microsoft will make it easier and more obvious in future updates.
