LG-G-Flex-2-09When it comes to smartphones, the typical form factor is a rectangular design, although BlackBerry did try to break the mold with the BlackBerry Passport, a handset which seemed to be more square than rectangle. Companies have also experimented with larger displays and curved displays, like the recent LG G Flex 2, but what’s next?

Speaking to TrustReviews, LG’s Director of Corporate Communications Ken Hong seemed to be under the impression and belief that the smartphone form factor has peaked, and that there is nothing much companies can do at the moment as the design of their phones are pretty much limited to the components that are used.

Referring to the LG G Flex 2 that was unveiled at CES 2015, Hong stated, “The design of phones is restricted by the technology of our component suppliers, so now we can only do what they can create, and they can’t even do very many of the [G Flex 2].” He also cites technology like transparent displays as a possibility of the future, but mentions that it is not commercially viable at the moment.

Hong also seems to believe that LG will be the company that could come up with the next form factor for smartphones, “When you push hard enough you get results and with 60 companies under the LG umbrella, we’re likely to come up with something cool to do before someone else does.” But what do you guys think? Do you agree that the smartphone form factor has peaked? If so, what could be next?
