Earlier this week Microsoft finally released the Windows 10 for Phones preview. Unfortunately the pre-release software is only compatible with a handful of devices. Apparently there are “too many issues” that are preventing the company to expand this preview to all handsets. A developer has come up with a trick that lets people install Windows 10 for Phones preview on non-supported devices, however keep in mind that the process is tricky, and could potentially end up bricking the device.
It goes without saying that this is not recommended for users who have non-supported devices. If you do go ahead with the process to install Windows 10 for Phones preview on a non-supported device only you will be responsible for any damage to your device.
The trick that an XDA developer has put together basically fools the Windows Insider app to believe that the smartphone is actually a Lumia 635, which is supported by the preview, and thus the app downloads and installs Windows 10 for Phones preview on that particular device.
Before this can be done though anyone attempting this trick will have to change the phone’s ID and find out the correct country code for their handset. Even though the process sounds complicated many users report that it works as they have been able to install Windows 10 for Phones preview on devices like the HTC One M8 for Windows and the HTC 8X.
The process has been explained in detail by the developer over at XDA Forums, with the disclaimer that the user themselves will be responsible if anything goes wrong.
