When the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge were released a few months back they came with software that fixed a problem that many musicians using Android devices might have noticed. The software reduced latency in real-time audio processing by using a special audio driver which minimizes latency and allows the user to hook up their device to a 3rd party audio interface. Samsung did say that this driver will be released for other high-end devices through a software update and the Galaxy S5 gets it in Android 5.0 Lollipop.
A 3rd party audio interface is an external piece of hardware which is needed in order to hook up the device to an audio rig. IK Multimedia backed Samsung’s move and released the Amplitube guitar processing app and made the iRig interface compatible with Samsung devices.
The company did follow through on its promise to bring this special drive to other high-end devices. Galaxy S5 users who have installed the Android 5.0 Lollipop update on their devices, Samsung has only released the update in a few markets right now, find minimum audio latency on their smartphones.
Samsung’s fix is exclusive to its own devices. Google has said to fix these audio latency issues on Android but anyone running vanilla Android 5.0 Lollipop will quickly tell you that this hasn’t been addressed in the latest update.
