The internet is now an integral part of our lives. We use it for communicating, banking, studying as well as for earning money through online businesses. More and more objects are rapidly being upgraded and connected to the internet in a trend that’s commonly referred to the “Internet of Things.” Shouldn’t our Wi-Fi gear be optimized and future-proof to handle all of these devices?
That’s what Eero claims to be. This tiny box can perform the function of a router, a repeater and a range extender making it a complete Wi-Fi system for any urban environment.
The Eero devices work together nicely. To create a mesh network in their home users simply have to connect two or more Eero devices wirelessly and that gets the mesh network going. No tricky settings to configure.
The San Francisco based startup behind this Wi-Fi system is also called Eero. Its device has a Bluetooth wireless chip, two Wi-Fi radios for simultaneous 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz connections.
Support for 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac is present along with 1GB of flash storage and 512MB RAM. Ports on the back allow for one network device and a cable or DSL model through two Gigabit ports.
Eero’s software has been designed to provide reliable connections for devices that are streaming video, and seeing as how streaming video is increasingly becoming popular, this is one feature of Eero that many people will like.
Its Bluetooth chip will act as a bridge between connected smart home devices and the internet so it has got users covered on that front as well.
A single Eero unit will cost $200 at retail but pre-order today to get it for $125. The three unit pack will cost $500 but those who pre-order can get it for $300.
Each unit is going to cover about 1,000 square feet which is why Eero is selling packs of three which will cover a typical U.S. household.
