In December last year Amazon launched a new service called Prime Now. It brought a one-hour delivery option for Manhattan residents. The service was actually offered in select areas of Manhattan where customers could use a dedicated Prime Now app for Android and iOS to place orders for products that can be delivered to their door in one hour. Starting today Amazon is expanding Prime Now across the whole island.
Amazon Prime Now actually offers customers free two-hour delivery between 6am to 12am. Customers can choose to get products delivered within an hour if they pay an extra $7.99.
The service isn’t applicable on all products that can be purchased from the retailer. Instead its limited to household products like batteries, shampoo, books, toys, paper towels, etc.
It is a good option if you haven’t got the time to rush out to get these general household items. With Amazon Prime Now items like these can be delivered to your door in just one hour provided you live in Manhattan and are willing to pay $7.99 for the service.
Products that can be purchased through this service are listed in the dedicated Amazon Prime Now app that’s available for Android and iOS.
This is the first major expansion of Prime Now since it now covers the entire island of Manhattan. Amazon hasn’t revealed its future expansion strategy just yet so who knows, if the response isn’t too good in Manhattan, the company might end up shelving the idea of one-hour delivery altogether.
Update: Amazon reached out to clarify that it plans on expanding Prime Now to additional cities in 2015.
