3D Printed Solar Car Prototypes Created By University Students

The Shell EcoMarathon Asia solar car race is about to happen later this month, and no doubt about it one will be able to check out some of the more unique offerings that carry cutting edge technology. In fact, students over from the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore will be submitting their 3D-printed solar car, now how about it?

Known as the NTU Venture 8, this particular solar-powered ride took approximately a year in development, followed by building it. It is said that the NTU Venture 8 is capable of hitting speeds of up to 60 kph – which is approximately 37 mph, where it will also boast of a sensible micro-car look alongside doors that open vertically (gullwing inspired, perhaps?), clearly placing it within the competition’s “urban concept” category in terms of design.

This would most probably be the very first 3D-printed concept car for Singapore, and chances are, the same title can be claimed in all of Asia, too. The cockpit itself has been made from a total of 150 plastic components, where it will boast of an extremely tough honeycomb design which will help maximize interior space. There will also be a translucent skin that is guaranteed to be a head turner should the NTU Venture 8 eventually hit the market in some form. Do take note that 3D printed cars have appeared as recently as at the Detroit Auto Show this year.
