Microsoft recently released the Lumia Denim update for all supported devices. It brings the first major update of Windows Phone 8.1 apart from some features that are exclusive to Lumia devices. The update should spread across all markets by the end of this month. It recent reports prove anything it’s possible that this might be the last Windows Phone 8.1 update as the next one, Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2, may be skipped in favor of Windows 10.
On January 21st Microsoft is going to unveil the consumer version of Windows 10. It is at this event that the company is also expected to show off Windows 10 for mobile devices. Some reports even suggest that a preview of Windows 10 for smartphones and tablets will be released shortly after the event.
Even though Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 was rumored multiple times, it was said to bring a host of new features, Microsoft never said if and when it will be launched. It was sort of assumed by the rumor mill that this update would come a few months after Lumia Denim.
With a pre-release testing program for Windows 10 believed to be around the corner it really wouldn’t leave a lot of space for an entirely new Windows Phone 8.1 update. The possibility exists that whatever features that were supposed to be included in this release will now come with Windows 10.
Microsoft is expected to release Windows 10 for mobile devices at some point later this year.
