It seems that player experience will be the top priority when it comes to Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, as opposed to the game’s framerate. The game’s director, Bruce Straley, was speaking his mind in the latest issue of EDGE, and he did confirm that the PlayStation Experience demo happened to be locked to 30 frames-per-second, never mind that in reality, it runs at above that particular figure. Straley mentioned, “We’re actually above 30, but we locked it [for the demo].”
He then continued, “We’re going to do whatever it takes to make the game we want to make. If it means we could go for 60 but lose something that would really impact the player’s experience, then it’s our choice as developers to say, ‘Well, we’re going to go for the experience over the 60 frames.’”
In other words, he could actually have his team let loose and hit 60fps if they so desire, but considering there are only so many resources that a developer can fall back on where a console is concerned, that it is best to preserve the player’s experience so that they will keep coming back for more. After all, in the past, a locked or near-locked 30 frames-per-second happened to be the modus operandi for Naughty Dog games on the PS3 platform – older Uncharted games and The Last of Us included.
