The report claims that Samsung has recently hired a Lee Don-tae of London-based design company called Tangerine. For those who have read up on Apple’s history including those of their personnel, you might recall that Tangerine is the design firm that Apple’s Jony Ive used to work at before making the jump to the Cupertino company.
Lee’s position at Samsung is said to be a rather high up one. He will be working from Samsung’s Design Management Center which apparently falls directly under Samsung’s CEO’s control, meaning that Lee could be reporting directly to the CEO, kind of like how Ive’s position at Apple has been.
He will also be responsible for taking Samsung’s overall design in a new direction, not just for the Samsung Galaxy S6 (which is said to be made from metal, a first in the lineup). In any case it will be interesting to see how big of a departure the Galaxy S6 will be in terms of design from the previous handsets, and if the new design and direction that Samsung is headed will be able to reignite sales.
