While most laptops coming out with the new Intel Gen5 Core M remain more or less classic in their design, Samsung is taking this opportunity to push the notion of [laptop] mobility forward with a brand new 12.2” ATIV Book 9 laptop, which weighs only 2.06Lbs (0.93Kg) and 0.46” thin. This in itself is already impressive and worthy of attention, but the design is also ultra-thin and fan-less.To be fair, most new laptops are getting ever thinner, and it’s no surprise that the recent Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro has a noticeably thinner design. But by all standards, this ATIV Book 9 is remarkable, if not a bit extreme.
As one may expect, the ATIV Book 9 comes with a very nice 2560×1600 display which can be as bright as 700 Nits, which is handy when using it outdoors. On the other hand, Samsung also claims a battery life of 10.5 hours, using industry-standard benchmarks. This time, Samsung has also added a privacy mode, which blurs the screen, or select parts of the screen, at a touch of a button: some laptop designers may have gotten the idea in the plane or the subway!
Inside the ATIV Book 9, there’s the Intel Core M (model 5Y10c, Gen 5) which integrated a graphics controller. The CPU has access to up to 8GB of RAM and there is as much as 256GB of user storage if you choose the more expensive option (this computer starts at $1,199).
Despite its size, the ATIV Book 9 has two USB 3.0, one micro HDMI, one SD card reader and one network port (requires a dongle). It also has two 1.5W speakers and a 720p Webcam. It will be available in “Imperial Black”, which visually looks like the color used for previous ATIV 9 or Series 9 Samsung laptops.
