Round smartwatches seem to be all the rage these days. Motorola kicked it off with the Moto 360 last year. LG’s second Android Wear smartwatch was the G Watch R which also had the round design. Samsung has launched multiple smartwatches, one which even has 3G capability, but they all have different designs. Looks like the company now wants to change this.
Many of Samsung’s fans have criticised the company for not giving them a round smartwatch. The design is popular with customers because it tends to look a lot more like a conventional watch, apart from the fact that round smartwatches tend to look good on the wrist, but the unique shape also poses a manufacturing challenge for companies.
Looks like Samsung is finally willing to tackle the challenge. Sammobile reports that the company is working on a round-dial smartwatch carrying model number SM-R720 with the “Orbis” internal codename. It is believed that this device is going to have a ring operated design which is something that hasn’t been seen on previous smartwatches from Samsung.
Another major difference that this product will have over the rest will be operating system. While Samsung is open to Android Wear, the Orbis is said to be powered by Tizen, the company’s homegrown operating system which was just adopted for all of its 2015 smart TVs.
Samsung is reportedly planning to show the Orbis at the Mobile World Congress 2015 in March.
