Google Glass is a unique wearable device that has been an experiment for far too long. The company didn’t go through with a commercial launch even though it was highly anticipated in 2014. Now last week it was confirmed that Glass is graduating from Google X labs and moving into a division of its own headed by Nest CEO Tony Fadell. This means that the wearable device will no longer be sold in its current form, making today the last today to purchase a Google Glass from the company.
Soon after this device was unveiled Google only allowed a handful of people, who had received an invite, to purchase a unit under its Explorer program for $1,500. Over time the Explorer program was expanded and ultimately last year Glass was brought to the Play Store so that anyone could pick it up.
Google didn’t remove the “Explorer Edition” tag from the device which meant that the price tag stood at $1,500. That’s not a price that majority of the market is going to pay for a wearable device which is why it makes sense for the company to stop selling it in this form.
The company has clarified on multiple occasions that this doesn’t mean Glass is dead. Google will continue to work on future versions and who knows they might even come out with one that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Those who are interested in putting down $1,500 for a novelty product can pick one up only today from the Play Store.
If you miss your chance, there’s always eBay.
