A couple of months back Sony unveiled the 20th Anniversary edition PlayStation 4. This limited edition production run of the console was meant to celebrate two decades of Sony’s gaming platform. Only 12,300 units were produced and as expected they were quickly picked up by enthusiasts, as well as scalpers, who then sold the units online for eye-watering profits. Sony auctioned the very first of these limited edition units and raised around $130,000.
The 20th Anniversary edition PlayStation 4 comes with the gray color scheme of the original PlayStation console. Other than that there’s nothing different about this console and the one you can purchase from a variety of retailers.
Sony put up the first unit, with serial number 00001 of 12,300, for sale online through Yahoo Auctions in Japan. The first bids were received earlier this week. A bidding war played out for a few days before someone finally secured the winning bid. ¥15,135,000, about $130,000, was the price paid by someone in Japan for this unique console.
The company conducted this exercise for a good cause. All of the money raised in this auction is going to be donated to Save The Children Japan.
A representative for Sony said that the company appreciates all those who participated in the auction, and is “surprised at the highest bid price, which was higher than our expectations.”
