Dropbox Acquires Productivity Startup CloudOn

Dropbox is a great way for users to store their file in the clouds and thanks to its accompanying apps, users will be able to sync their files across their mobile devices and computers wherever they go. This is great if you just want to share files and documents, but what if you wanted more advanced cloud features?

The good news is that it looks like Dropbox is beefing up their services once again as the company has recently announced that they have acquired mobile productivity startup CloudOn. For those unfamiliar, CloudOn is an online service that allows users to create, edit, and share files from Microsoft Office and other such apps online.

At the moment CloudOn is boasting that they have around 9 million registered users, so there is a good chance we could be seeing those users added to Dropbox’s list, assuming that they aren’t using Dropbox’s services at the moment. CloudOn also announced that they will be closing the signups for its services starting from today, and will be shutting down for good come March 2015.

According to CloudOn, “We’re thrilled to continue building things that help people work better — and we’re proud and excited to join the Dropbox team to help people be more productive every day.” It is unclear as to what Dropbox has planned for CloudOn specifically, but either way we will keep our eyes and ears peeled for any potential new services/features that could be launched in the future.
