Cablevision Launches Freewheel Wi-Fi Only Phone Service

We tend to conserve our mobile data where possible and use Wi-Fi instead. There are some companies out there that want to bring customers over to Wi-Fi for their phone call needs as well, ending their reliance on traditional mobile carriers. Cablevision, a cable provider, has now joined the list of such companies. Today it announced Freewheel which is a Wi-Fi only phone service that’s light on the pocket.

Cablevision is the first cable provider to introduce an all Wi-Fi phone service in the country. It provides unlimited data, talk and text exclusively over Wi-Fi. It will work anywhere in the world whereas Wi-Fi connection is available and will operate only when the device is connected to a wireless network.

All Freewheel customers will be able to automatically access Optimum Wi-Fi network that covers over 1.1 million hotspots. Potential customers interested in trying this service out can sign up for Freewheel next month through its website. The service costs $29.95 for everyone while Cablevision Optimum Online customers only have to pay $9.95 per month.

There are no annual contracts. Freewheel is exclusively available on the Motorola Moto G which is being offered at a discounted price of $99.95.

The obvious drawbacks of this service is that it isn’t useful at all in locations where there’s no Wi-Fi network, like on the subway, so keep that in mind before you say goodbye to a traditional mobile carrier.
