The holiday season is usually one of the most lucrative times for many consumer electronics companies. That’s because shoppers are out in full force, picking up new things for themselves and as gifts for friends and family. Its no surprise that many companies see strongest sales during these weeks but the reality was different for Barnes and Noble it seems. As per a new report B&N Nook division’s sales dipped 55 percent during the holiday season.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Barnes & Noble’s Nook division saw sales decline by 55 percent during the nine weeks ending January 3rd. This period included Black Friday, a day known for record-breaking purchases of gadgets and gizmos, as well as Cyber Monday and Christmas.
The total revenue collected during this period stood at $56 million. Barnes & Noble also saw a decline in digital content sales, much like what happened with its Nook e-readers.
Last year Barnes & Noble launched two devices in collaboration with Samsung, the Galaxy Tab 4 Nook and Galaxy Tab 4 Nook 10.1. These devices have custom software from B&N while providing full access to Google’s services and the Play Store but clearly they were unable to bring in enough customers for the company’s Nook division.
Some analysts are now of the view that even if B&N wanted to sell off the Nook division it would have trouble seeing how the performance has decline in the recent past.
