Like many of its online video streaming rivals Amazon has been creating original content for Prime Instant Video under the Amazon Studios banner. It is clearly happy with what the folks at the Studios division have been doing because Amazon today announced its move into the movie business.

Amazon Studios will produce a “dozen original, prestige movies” every year which will be launched in theaters and will arrive on Prime Instant Video 30-60 days after their theatrical release, the company said today.

In its press release the company said that Amazon Studios will be responsible for production and acquisition of original movies for theatrical release and early window distribution on Amazon Prime Instant Video. Usually it takes 39 to 52 weeks for movies to appear on subscription video services and Amazon wants to undercut that with its latest move.

This will give Amazon the ability to bring these movies to its online subscription video service in just 4-8 weeks after they hit theaters. The creative development team will focus on “unique stories, voices and characters” from the best as well as upcoming creators.

Ted Hope will be the man in charge whose production company was behind movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon among others.

It hasn’t been revealed as yet what the first movie produced by Amazon Studios is going to be.
