Amazon’s much rumored smartphone, the Fire Phone, failed to leave its mark. It would be safe to say that this smartphone flopped. The company is now said to be reorganizing the division that worked on this smartphone as it hopes to fare better with the second generation smartphone. It continues to try and unload existing units by cutting prices. The latest move is to discount Fire Phone to $199 off-contract with an entire year’s free subscription to Amazon Prime.
Amazon previously dropped the off-contract price to $199 back in November 2014. On AT&T the on-contract price was dropped from $199 to $0.99 with a two year agreement. Clearly the company felt the need to do more just to get the existing units out.
This is a good deal. Originally an unlocked Fire Phone costed $449. For $189 today one can purchase a Fire Phone with an year’s worth of Prime for free which in itself is a $99 value. By paying a bit more customers can have a spare smartphone as well if Prime is really only what interests them.
The $189 32GB Fire Phone model brings a 4.7-inch HD display, 2.2GHz quadcore processor and 2GB RAM, a 13 megapixel rear camera, unlimited cloud photo storage and more. It is only compatible with GSM networks so customers in the U.S. will have to use it on AT&T and T-Mobile.
For now the $189 price is being offered through the daily deals section on Amazon. The possibility exists that its price may climb up once again as the sale ends.
