If there is one thing about freemium games, it would be this – you would have to invest a whole lot of real world currency in order to gain an edge and make decent progress in the game itself. In fact, one might want to be more careful at just how one spends money in such games, and while EVE Online is not a freemium title but a subscription-based one, you would still be able to make in-game purchases via real world money. Ozuwara Ozuwara, a gamer in the EVE Online universe, saw his precious cargo that was purchased for $1,500 in real world cash, get obliterated by a fellow player during a raid.
The precious cargo in question would be PLEX, and this happens to be something which can be purchased only using cold, hard cash, in exchange for a liquid in-game commodity. It is also enough for 30 days og gaming time – and there are risks associated with it in-game too, since PLEX can be targeted by thieves, or recovered by someone who didn’t buy it. In this particular case, however, the entire cargo was vaporized.
Pretty sad, actually, and this just goes to show how valuable commodities in a game ought to be given the same kind – or at least somewhat more thought of protection, just like how there are military or security escorts when it comes to ferrying money in the real world from one location to another.
