The next-generation Web OS will come with quantifiable gains, according to the LG’s announcement. The company says that Web OS 2.0 will boot 60% faster and loading apps like YouTube will be 70% faster. Pretty much everyone knows that Smart TVs can be annoyingly slow, and it’s great to use metrics like these to improve the user experience because that’s where the friction is. This is exactly why people continue to buy $100 “TV boxes”, despite the fact that many functions are technically available on the TV.
In terms of user interface (UI), LG is now allowing users to customize their live TV (or set top box) channels right in the Launcher Bar at the bottom of the screen. That way, they won’t have to see dozens (if not hundreds) of channels they don’t care about. Finally, and not surprisingly, LG is quick to remind that it has worked with Amazon and Netflix to get more 4K content, and that process can’t happen fast enough.
More details on the actual TV will be revealed at CES, so keep an eye on our site on Monday January 5 at 8am when the LG press conference will start.
