I am quite sure that many of us are more than familiar with the name Vaio – after all, this is the name of Sony’s notebook range, where more often than not, the Vaio brand name exudes the image of cool looking design (back in the day) as well as a rather expensive price tag. Well, over the years, plenty has happened, and Vaio itself as a brand has spun off from Sony, with us receiving word that Vaio is preparing itself to look beyond the world of personal computers, targeting an early 2015 release date for its smartphones. In the same manner as that of Vaio laptops in later years, the company intends to roll out its smartphones in the Land of the Rising Sun only – at least in the beginning.
The first Vaio smartphone is said to arrive via a partnership with Japan Communications, which happens to be a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that offers low-cost wireless service. Apart from that, details remain scant as at press time, but it is tipped that the new Vaio smartphone will be powered by Google’s Android mobile operating system, and chances are we will see mid-range devices arrive first.
Forget about the Vaio handsets going toe to toe with the flagship models from Sony like the Xperia Z3, or perhaps the soon-to-arrive Xperia Z4.
