The Assassin’s Creed franchise has yet to feature an Asian setting in a full and proper way. There is Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China, but that’s not exactly a flagship title unlike Assassin’s Creed Unity or Black Flag and the other titles before it, so what does that mean? Does it mean that Ubisoft has no interest in expanding their titles into Asia?
That is hardly the case. Speaking to the Chinese press during the PlayStation China announcement, Ubisoft’s Stephanie Perotti was quoted as saying, “I don’t think that we said we weren’t interested in Chinese history. I think that we notice a lot of stories—we want to have creativity to create the right story [within the right context].”
She also adds, “If we have Assassin’s Creed creators that want to spend time [understanding the history of the setting], we can understand Chinese history or Japanese history and make these games about history.” However Perotti did mention that creating an Assassin’s Creed title for Feudal Japan could be tricky.
After all there are numerous games involving samurai and ninja at the moment, so what could Ubisoft offer that wouldn’t make the game feel like it’s been played before? “Feudal Japan would work as an Assassin’s game, for sure, but I feel like it would start to look like ‘oh, have I played this?’ You know what I mean – ‘oh, I’ve been a ninja before, I’ve been a samurai before.'”
As it stands we already know that 2015’s Assassin’s Creed will be based on a Victorian theme set in London which means that if and when Ubisoft were to get around to creating an Asian-inspired title, 2016 would be your best bet, but what say you? Would you love to see Ubisoft launch a full-fledged Assassin’s Creed game based on Asia?
