Speaking in the latest issue of Game Informer, Sakurai stated that trying to match the content of every previous Smash Bros. title is becoming too big of a task. “In terms of scope, and in terms of sheer number of characters, we went beyond our limits long ago. And yet, if we cut the number of fighters or modes in a future game, I’m sure there would be complaints.”
In fact he feels that this is such a monumental task that whoever potentially takes his place will have his/her work cut out for them. “I feel like we’ve arrived at a very difficult place. One thing I can say, however, is that I hope people don’t think that Smash Bros. has come to its natural conclusion as a matter of course. That’s my personal plea.”
Of course this is by no means a confirmation that Sakurai will be quitting the series, but for now it looks like he’s certainly pretty tired from having to live up to the expectations and demands of gamers. It seems highly unlikely that Nintendo will discontinue the Smash Bros. franchise especially when you consider the latest title managed to break several records for Nintendo, but what do you guys think? Will Smash Bros. be a very different game in the future without Sakurai at the helm?
