Microsoft has just confirmed that they will be purchasing the email startup known as Acompli, although the tech giant decided not to disclose the amount of money that exchanged hands along the way. Acompli came under the limelight courtesy of its synonymous app for both Android and iOS platforms. Why Acompli? Well, it probably captured Microsoft’s fancy thanks to the amount of extensive support available for the company’s Exchange servers.
While it might feature limited Exchange email and calendar compatibility within the iOS and Android platforms, Acompli still manages to handle tasks such as creating events, responding to invites, and managing contacts in a manner that is far more similar to that of Microsoft’s Outlook compared to a regular third-party app despite being one. Hence, an acquisition does make plenty of sense, with Microsoft requiring not much work other than to relabel the app itself, or to use it as a future foundation for an Outlook app when it comes to releasing it on either iOS or Android.
These days seem to see more and more acquisitions happen rather than companies performing their very own in-hose research and development -I suppose this is one of the more efficient business models, but the biggest issue could very well lie with the integration of people and not systems at the end of it.
