Shawn Levy, the director of Night at the Museum, was previously attached with the Minecraft movie project. The Warner Bros. studio is behind it. Levy revealed in an interview that he has left the project because the idea he pitched, which of a “Goonies-style” adventure, was rejected by Mojang, the developer of Minecraft which was recently acquired by Microsoft.

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Levy said that the Minecraft movie would have been based around the feeling of The Goonies, a classic from 1985. It wouldn’t have been a pure comedy, it was an adventure movie, and Levy says he thought “it could have been a lot of fun and fulfilled a lot of the qualities that people love about the game.”

Levy said that this approach felt good to him and he discussed it with Mojang, which didn’t quite see eye to eye with the director. “That doesn’t sound like what we want,” Levy quotes Mojang, “If we’re going to see a movie get made, we don’t know what we want, but that doesn’t feel right.”

Now that Levy has moved on from the project it remains unclear at this point who will be brought in to fill the director’s chair. “Mojang is still figuring out what they want,” Levy says, so it may be a while before we get to see a Minecraft movie up on the big screen.
