Virtual reality has been the talk of the town in recent months. Many are asking when Oculus will finally start shipping its consumer version. Its developer kits have seen decent response from developers but now its time to see if the product is going to take off in the consumer market. Looks like the Facebook-owned company is ready to do that now. Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe has said that the consumer version of Oculus Rift is “months, not years away.”

Iribe made these comments when speaking at the Web Summit in Ireland. He does caution though that it may take “many months” before a full scale consumer launch of the Rift and that’s mainly because of one issue.

The issue revolves around an input mechanism that will be suitable for use with a VR headset. One can expect to use a mouse or a keyboard as an input device so there has to be a solution that’s specific to VR technology, work is underway on a solution, but it will take time.

Even though Iribe has said that the consumer launch is months away that doesn’t really mean you should expect it in the next couple of months or so. A significant portion of 2015 may pass before Rift is ready for that kind of exposure, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed nonetheless.
