Chromebooks have carved out space for themselves in the notebook market, particularly in the U.S., as they are increasingly becoming popular with the likes of students and small businesses. This had lead to a growth in sales of these Chrome OS powered notebooks and OEMs are showing more interest in coming up with their own models. If a report is to be believed Lenovo could hit the market next year with its very own Chromebook that will be competitively priced.
The report comes from Taiwanese trade publication Digitimes which claims, citing information from Taiwan-based supply chain makers, that Lenovo’s Chromebook will be targeting the sub-$170 segment early next year. The sources believe this is going to bring down profits for notebook vendors.
As far as the specifications are concerned, it is believed that these Lenovo Chromebooks will be powered by processors from Rockchip Electronics, a firm based in China, which will be produced by China-based ODM Bitland Information Technology. Rockchip will reportedly also look after integration of supply chain for the company.
Digitimes Research estimates that Lenovo is going to ship 1.5 million Chromebooks in 2015, with global shipments of these notebooks from different OEMs to cross six million units in 2014, and double up to 12 million units in 2015.
