3D printers have been around for a while now so they’re not likely to wow anybody that keeps on top of whatever is happening in the world of technology, but FLUX is something that might catch their attention. It is a modular 3D printer, the makers describe it as the “world’s first modular 3D printer,” which means it can do a lot more. FLUX can also be used as a 3D scanner and laser engraver.

For printing in 3D FLUX uses high resolution stepper motors to print objects. The built-in 3D scanner allows users to easily clone 3D objects without needing any special software for the purpose. An interchangeable module which has a 200mW laser head brings the ability to perform laser engraving.

Additional modules are on the cards as well which include a dual extruder, a ceramics extruder and even a pastry extruder. The open module SDK will allow other engineers to come up with their own ideas about different modules and share them with the user community.

The team behind FLUX is seeking $100,000 in crowdfunding on Kickstarter. A minimum pledge of $499 will get backers a complete FLUX kit with 500g of material. This is limited for 200 backers only. Shipping is not included and an additional $80 is required for the laser engraving module that comes with a set of laser safety glasses.
