November 2013 was a great month for gamers because both next-generation consoles were released weeks apart from each other. Ever since it was launched the PlayStation 4 hasn’t looked back. It was the first to hit 10 million units sold and has continued its lead in multiple markets around the world. Microsoft had to make drastic decisions to catch up, and now Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen is of the view that the gap between sales is going to be plugged soon.
Not too long ago Microsoft also announced that Xbox One sales have topped 10 million units, but it made this announcement three months after Sony, notwithstanding the fact that it had to cut the console’s price by unbundling the Kinect to breathe new life in sales.
Jorgensen made these comments during his talk at the UBS Global Technology Conference. He acknowledged that Sony did clinch an early lead with not only a great console but what he believes to be a “great pricing strategy,” while also assuring that “Microsoft is catching up quickly.”
He believes that pricing actions taken by Microsoft will improve the Xbox One’s position in the coming holiday season, that coupled with game bundles, might bring about an increase in Xbox One sales and provide it a decent chance to match PlayStation 4’s sales.
It is an interesting assumption on Jorgensen’s part but ultimately it will be the customers who decide which console will come out on top after the holiday season. I for one am intrigued about the result.
