We’re seeing TV networks adapt their offerings for the internet age and the latest such move comes from the folks at CBS. It has launched a new 24-hour online news channel which will be streaming through its website as well as mobile applications. The new online network is called CBSN and CBS has plans to add live anchored coverage as well that will run from 9AM to midnight, Eastern, on weekdays.
CBS claims that this is the first streaming channel of its kind, which allows viewers to keep up with the latest news around the clock, either through the network’s website or applications. CBS isn’t jumping on the online streaming bandwagon for the first time because last month it allowed viewers streaming access to CBS provided that they have a subscription.
There won’t be duplicity of content between CBSN and CBS. The former will have its own coverage apart from airing content from CBS Sports, News as well as other affiliates. Content from CBS News might also be shown when some important breaking news comes in.
Viewers will have the ability to forward through prior coverage as well, but don’t expect an ad-free experience, commercials will be aired. The app for Android will be out by the end of this year, currently it works through the Windows 8 app, on Roku and Fire TV as well as the network’s website.
