When playing online games that requires teamwork, such as raids, dungeons, or in MOBAs, those who quit halfway or early in the game because things aren’t going well can be pretty frustrating, not to mention it annoys gamers who are actually trying and looking to play a proper and complete game.
So with Blizzard’s upcoming MOBA Heroes of the Storm, how will Blizzard address the issue of those leaving halfway through the game? Well basically Blizzard will rely on karma. Speaking at a Heroes of the Storm panel at BlizzCon, the game’s director Dustin Browder mentioned that these leavers will have their accounts flagged.
When they have accumulated enough flags, these gamers will then be placed into a special branch of matchmaking games with other players who have been flagged similarly. Basically if you leave often enough, you will be forced to play with other leavers too, thus giving you a taste of your own medicine.
According to Browder, “If you play as a leaver, we will put you with other people who are leavers. Since you have indicated to us that you like that style of play, we will put you with people who share that style of play.” Ouch, pretty harsh words, but at the same time we can appreciate Blizzard’s attempts to make the game as fun for everyone without letting a few rotten apples ruin it for the rest of us.
The reason behind this move is because Blizzard wants players to feel like they have the ability to turn things around even if it looks like they are losing. Leavers will also be further penalized by not receiving any rewards at all. Heroes of the Storm is expected to enter into a closed beta come 2015
